The sensitivity, robustness and flexibility of the Magnia® reader is derived from its novel, patented magnetometer.
The sensor consists of a set of four planar micro coils symmetrically aligned as an impedance bridge. One coil is under the reading zone of the instrument while a matching coil reads a control area of the lateral-flow strip. When a high frequency magnetic field is passed through the coils, the presence of paramagnetic particles changes the inductance of the reading coil. This imbalance leads to a signal. The output signal is proportional to the amount of paramagnetic particles and, hence, captured antibody present in the detection zone. The two other coils read the background from the surroundings and compensate for it.

Coil A reads the capture zone while coil B compensates for background. Coils C and D eliminate background variation in magnetic and electrical fields.
Sensitivity
The Magnia® reader quantifies the particles in a cube the full thickness of the reading zone.
This provides greater sensitivity and precision, as all the bound particles are quantified and the read-out is less affected by variations in the lateral flow membrane.
Wide Dynamic Range
A major advantage of magnetometers is that that have very wide dynamic ranges
Magnetism can be measured with great sensitivity while magnetometers are less prone to saturation than optical methods. This leads to wide assay ranges and sensitivity for both competitive and sandwich assays.
4-log dynamic ranges can be obtained.
